Cermets have a high abrasive wear resistance. Fracture toughness however is lower than carbide. Cermets are used for cutting Mild and Low Carbon Steels.

 

Tungsten Carbides are used to cut stainless steels. Because of their increased hardness, they are less subject to chipping. Carbides are also used for cutting High Carbon Steels.
